League Game 9: Werder Bremen vs Santa Cruz Breakers

The Breakers came prepared to take on Werder Bremen after a tough 2-0 defeat against their new rivals Stade Rennais FC.

Werder Bremen is a German sports club best known for its football team playing in Bremen, in the northwest German federal state of the same name. The club was founded on 4 February 1899 as Fußballverein Werder by a group of sixteen vocational high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment to set them on their way. They took their name from the seldom used regional German word for “river peninsula”, describing the riverside field they first played football on.

The match began with the Breakers giving up an early goal at the 9'. Unfortunately, this has become a fairly routine pattern for the Breakers who typically struggle in the first 20 minutes of any match.

Although the Breakers battled back, they were unable to get a goal in the first half of the match. Their offense attempted to have a build up, but most led to not even a shot on goal.

Although the Breakers continued to play hard and even had the opportunity with a few shots on goal, none reached the back of the net!

The Breakers ran into bad luck with an "own goal" giving Werder Bremen a 2-0 lead at the 69'. This is not the first time the defense has broken down and scored an "own goal".

This began a flurry of additional goals by Werder Bremen at the 77' and 81'.

At this point, it was clear that the Breakers had not chance in the match. The Breakers became frustrated after their own goal and was unable to regroup giving up the third and fourth goal appeared out of pure frustration and lack of discipline.

The Breakers need to move on from this terrible defeat and become more focused!
